A medical condition usually characterized with the shedding of the uterine lining in the first trimester of pregnancy is referred to as decidual bleeding. It mostly occurs in the deciduas area not yet experiencing placenta and embryo development in the first three months of pregnancy. Decidua is an endometrial epithelial tissue.

It is however not a serious medical condition that causes for serious concern. In spite of its harmlessness, it is advisable to seek medical attention whenever there is bleeding in the first trimester.

Symptoms

The main symptom of deciduas bleeding is bloody discharge experienced in the first trimester of pregnancy.

The bleeding discharges emanating from the deciduas are very rare. The bleeding is a menstruation-like one.

Duration and nature of the bleeding

The duration of decidual bleeding lasts for a maximum of one day. The level of bleeding is significantly lower compared to menstruating type. A woman may sense some signs of an uncomfortable sensation, while others may have feelings of pain or heavy sensation.

Causes

The main cause is due to changes in the body as a result of hormonal imbalance in the course of the shedding off in the uterine. Bleeding always follows shedding of the uterine lining.

It is advisable for patients to consult with physician for any signs of bleeding because it may be a possible sign of complication or risk to the pregnancy.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis depends greatly on the condition of the woman. There is also need to distinguish normal menstrual bleeding from decidual bleeding.

The role of female hormones such as the estrogen, the follicle-stimulating hormone, the luteinizing hormone and the progesterone are strategic and fundamental in the menstrual period as they convey impulses to the reproductive system to work effectively and efficiently.

There is usually an end to menstruation immediately conception is achieved. The hormones adjust to new role of providing conducive atmosphere for the growing fetus. Whenever, there is a hormonal imbalance in the pregnant woman within the first trimester, it resulted into the shedding of some parts of the uterine lining and thereby causing what is known as decidual bleeding.

This can be diagnosed through physical examination of the symptoms and the use of trans-vaginal ultrasound scan.

Treatment

Seeking adequate medical attention will inform the doctor on the possible management option. It must be emphasized that no particular treatment is required for this condition as it does not portend any risk for the pregnant woman and the fetus.
