Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a serious life threatening and emergency allergic reaction which can occur within a twinkle of an eye at sudden exposure to certain things which can either be in form of consumables or non consumables. The flood of chemicals released by your immune system during anaphylaxis can cause you to go into shock; anaphylaxis requires an immediate trip to the emergency department where an injection of epinephrine is given . If anaphylaxis isn’t treated right away, it can lead to unconsciousness or even death. 




Anaphylaxis Warning Signs

Chest pain or tightness, and trouble swallowing

  • Hives, swelling, a tingling feeling, itchiness, or a skin rash

  • Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, diarrhea, and stomach cramps

  • Low blood pressure, blocked airways leading to unconsciousness, shock

Some foods that can trigger anaphylaxis in some people and once noticed it is better avoided because it can be highly risky.

Ground nuts

Groundnuts are one of the most common cause of food-related allergy death. They can trigger anaphylaxis causing a reaction that may be fatal if not treated right away. Symptoms usually start within minutes of exposure. But they can also start within seconds or take hours to develop. Call the attention of everyone around on notice and visit the hospital with immediate effect. The  first sign of swelling, hives, trouble breathing, a rapid pulse, or dizziness should signal that an  allergic attack could occur.

Bitter Leaf

Consuming bitter leaf for some people could lead to skin rashes all over the body. Once eaten once and it is observed then it should become one of such food to avoid.

Shell fish & Shrimp

Eating shellfish, such as shrimp, lobster, and crab are triggers for some people. Shellfish and fish allergies can be so serious that just the cooking vapors can sometimes trigger an allergic reaction. As a reaction gets worse, tissues swell, blocking airways, and people can have deadly heart and circulation problems.

Cashew nuts

Some sets of related ground nuts are allergies in adult and cashew nuts fall into that category. Others are tiny sesame seed, lentils, peas, soy beans and other beans. The tiny sesame seed can cause an anaphylactic reaction. In addition to peanuts, children are often allergic to wheat, milk, and eggs. Because triggers can be hidden in other foods, read labels carefully. By law, the eight most common allergenic foods — milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, soy, and wheat — and ingredients made from them such as lecithin (soy) and whey (milk) should be listed.




Insects

Bites from venom from honeybees, yellow jackets, wasps, and hornets can cause anaphylaxis. If you have had a reaction to a sting or suspect an allergy, see an allergist about allergy shots. Allergy shots can be effective at preventing anaphylaxis from insect stings. .

Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers

Some drugs you buy in the chemist can suddenly turn into an allergy.Medications trigger anaphylaxis in some people. Aspirin, ibuprofen, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are some that may cause severe allergic reactions. Penicillin and other antibiotics are common causes of drug-related anaphylaxis. Chemotherapy drugs, imaging dyes, and muscle relaxants used in anesthesia can also cause problems. To prevent medication-related anaphylaxis, your doctor may suggest allergy shots or prescribe different medications.

Latex allergy

Allergy related Latex is not common but it happens to surgeons who operate regularly. For allergies in this area, a non latex synthethic gloves become an option. Triggers can also include gloves, IV tubes, syringes, and other items made with natural rubber latex. Even non-medical items like balloons, elastic, and condoms can cause reactions..

Exercise allergy

Exercise can be risky in certain people. The allergy here might not be exercise but some other atmospheric conditions like hot weather, cold weather or humid weather. Some people are allergic to swimming, dancing and walking for instance. These allergies might not happen all the time but one off . Recalling what changes in the manner of activities might help to avoid subsequent ones .

Asthma, heart disease and COPD can put you at risk for anaphylaxis. Taking adequate treatment for  primary medical conditions can help to avoid allergic occurrence.

Handling an Allergy Emergency

  • Let your spouse, friends and colleagues know your allergy in case of any unforeseen circumstances. 

  • Epinephrine can prevent or reverse anaphylaxis symptoms. The problem might be how to inject it during such period, if it can’t be injected; an emergency visit to the nearest hospital is needed.

  • Avoid any food or substances that cause you an allergy.
