My husband frequently complains that I have bad breath

Question: My husband frequently complains that I have bad breath. i have tried to assess my own breath by cupping a hand over my mouth and nose to smell my breath however am unable to detect a problem. what is your professional opinion Doc?

Doctors Response: Bad breath (halitosis) can be embarrassing and may cause anxiety. It is generally known and agreed that volatile sulphur compounds (VSC’s) produced by bacterial are responsible for the odor. 80-90% of these compounds come from the mouth. Some type of food we eat,dry mouth, medications and some dental problems can contribute to bad breath. In 10-20% of cases, the odor comes from other system in the body. In the case of ‘Halitophobia’ it is an exaggerated concern..consult for proper history, taking and diagnosis. Treatment depends on what is causing the problem.
