Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
It is a diseased condition associated with the inability to sustain or maintain a firm erection for sexual activity. It affects not only older men but also a number of young men are affected. ED or impotence is a sexual dysfunction characterised by the inability to develop or maintain an erection of the penis during sexual activity.
According to DR. Blaine Kristo of an urologist at Mercy Medical Centre, Baltimore, USA, ‘’Erections are all about blood flow’’. In a study and recent report from the U.S Department OF Health and Services, almost 12% of younger men experience ED, while 22% for men between 60 and 69 and 30% for those over 70. ED is a disease that affect the body’s cardiovascular system which is the network of arteries and veins that carry blood from the heart to the rest of the heart. Known causes ED include diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity, multiple sclerosis, enlarged prostate gland.
The treatment of ED depends on the cause, however, here are some facts to know about ED.
1. It is not the same thing as premature ejaculation.
2. Excessive alcohol is more likely to cause it than excessive sugar intake.
3. Emotional depression could lead to erectile dysfunction.
4. Drugs
i. Anti-hypertensive, E.g Methyl dopa (Aldomet), Nifedipine
ii. Antidepressants E.g., fluoxetine, Nortriptyline
iii. Antihistamines E.g. diphenhydramine, promethazine
iv. NSAIDs E.g. diclofenac, ibuprophen
Way out
Excercising, weight loss, reduced alcohol intake.
