Pain and usually swelling of the breast caused by edema and engorgement of the vascular and ductal systems is termed mastodynia,or mastalgia. Mastodynia specifically refers to a cyclical occurence of severe breast pain usually in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle.Common in women with PMS/PMDD(premenstrual syndrome/premenstrual dysphoric disorder),it may be a primary symptom of this syndrome in some cases. It has been shown to be related to high gonadotropin levels.An augmented response to prolactin has also been suggested.

A study also revealed that lisuride maleate,a dopamine agonist was associated with a significant decrease in pain.
