Salmonellosis, a food poisoning condition and bacterial infection caused by a group of salmonella bacteria which is transmitted through food or beverages that got contaminated by the feces of people or anima with salmonella bacteria. Salmonella food poisoning leads to bacterial infection, irritation and gastro-intestinal tract swollen.There are many causes of food borne disease. Common sources of foods contaminated with Salmonella bacteria;
Chicken, poultry product, half-cooked egg, seafood, meat, milk and dairy products, certain fruits and vegetables, food prepared by an infected person, pets’ feces with diarrhea commonly found in the feces of reptiles.

 

Symptoms
Common mild symptoms are abdominal pain, nausea, fever, headache, and diarrhea while dehydration, reiter’s syndrome and arthritis are of the complicated symptoms of salmonella food poisoning. Diagnosis
This involves reviewing personal and family medical history with specific symptoms, and thorough physical examination by the medical doctor. Following this, a stool sample will be taken for stool microscopic, followed by blood test to check if the salmonella bacteria have spread to the blood, followed by full blood count is needed to determine if an infectious process is present and urinalysis to determine if the patient is dehydrated.

 

Prevention
This condition is preventable and can be done by developing culture of hygiene and food preparation precautions. Dispose outdated food or perishable food that has been sitting at room temperature for two hours or longer. Do not eat raw or half-cooked eggs, meats, seafood or poultry. Leftover foods must be refrigerated.

 

Treatment
The first step in treating food poisoning is prevention. In addition to this, you can take medication in the form of antibiotics, ensure you have adequate intake of fluids to have good hydration until symptoms pass which takes three to seven days in a healthy adults.
