Am I going to die of cervical cancer? What can I do to save myself to avoid this?

Question: My smear test result is positive. Am I going to die of cervical cancer? What can I do to save myself to avoid this?

Doctors Response: Cancer of the cervix usually starts with pre-malignant lesions of the cervix which is what the cervical smear test screens for. After a positive cervical smear, a colposcopy is advised. This will help reveal the stage of the disease and possibly obtain a treatment which may involve freezing, burning or cutting off the affected area in the cervix. The time interval between the pre-malignant phase of the disease and cancer itself could take up to 10years.
