Cholesterol is a fatty substance which can clog the arteries leading to heart attack or stroke by interfering with blood flow through the affected artery. The cholesterol can be high or low depending on certain conditions. Low cholesterol level is very rare than high cholesterol, it is often associated with medical conditions such as cancer, depression and anxiety.

 

Importance of cholesterol in the body
In spite of the health problems associated with cholesterol, the role of cholesterol in the body cannot be underestimated. It is responsible for producing some hormones, secretion of vitamin D to absorb calcium and secretion of substances needed for digestion of foods. Cholesterol moves in the blood in the form of lipoproteins, which are tiny molecules of fat wrapped in protein.

 

 

Types

Basically, there are two major types of cholesterol:
Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) usually classified as bad cholesterol because it clogs the artery thereby preventing blood circulation in the body
High-density lipoprotein (HDL) usually classified as good cholesterol because it takes LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream to the liver where it is being excreted from the body.

 

 

Sources
The liver produced most of the cholesterol in the body. Other comes from the food while dietary cholesterol is gotten from animal food sources such as eggs, meat and poultry.

Possible disruption of brain functions leading to anxiety and depression
Increase risk of premature birth
High risk of delivery baby with low birth weight
Primary intra-cerebral hemorrhage

Symptoms

The symptoms of low cholesterol manifest in the complication associated with the condition, they include hopelessness, nervousness, confusion, agitation, mood swing, sleep disorder and difficulty making a decision

Family history
Using statins medication
Undergoing blood pressure treatment
Clinically untreated depression

 

 

Diagnosis
The diagnosis can be done through blood test to measure the amount of cholesterol in the blood. An LDL cholesterol less than 50 mg/dL or your total cholesterol is less than 120 mg/dL indicates low LDL cholesterol. 

 

 

Treatment
There is need to understand the underlying cause of the condition so as to be able to enjoy the best treatment option. Some of the treatment options may include the use of antidepressant drugs, dietary change and regular exercise to reduce excessive body fats.
It is important to know that whichever treatment options for low cholesterol level, it may be strictly recommended and prescribed by a medical doctor.

 

 

Prevention
Ensure the heart is kept healthy at all times by eating heart friendly foods and desisting from alcohol consuming and cigarette smoking.
Avoid engaging in activity that brings stress and anxiety.
