Angioedema is a medical condition accompanied by itchy welts and reddish hives developed on the skin surface. It is a form of inflammation affecting the deeper layers of the skin. The body secretes histamine which is responsible for the swelling of the blood vessels whenever there is an allergic reaction in the body. It can occur on the hands, feet, eyes and lips.

An inflamed throat or tongue may obstruct the airway making it difficult to breathe. A severe angioedema may also result in anaphylaxis which is a fatal allergic reaction.

Symptoms

Inflammation of the deeper surface of the skin
Stomach pain
Inflamed throat
Breathing difficulty

Causes
It primarily happens following an intense allergic reaction to foods or other substance. Any of the following allergens such as pollen, latex, drugs, foods, insect bites and poison could lead to angioedema. Leukemia can also lead to this disease condition.

Risk factors for developing Angioedema
There are several factors that predisposes one to developing angioedema, they include:

Stress or anxiety
Injury
Previous episode of angioedema
Family history of angioedema
Earlier allergic reaction
Unexpected changes in temperature

Diagnosis
Physical examination is required to seek for possible symptoms after previous medical history will be taken. The swollen areas will be examined by the doctor and also listen to your breathing to see if your throat has been affected.

C1 esterase inhibitor test and complement components C2 and C4 are some of the diagnostic tests that may be ordered by the doctor to determine the levels of specific proteins in the blood. Low levels suggest a health problem linked to inflammation and swelling.

Treatment

Using medications such as epinephrine, antihistamines and anti-inflammatory.
Using cool and wet compresses to soothe the skin and avert scratching
Using baking soda with a cool bath to ease itching
Wear loose cotton clothing to prevent additional skin irritation.
