I recently had an abortion and so worried about my reproductive potentials in future.

Question: I recently had an abortion and so worried about my reproductive potentials in future. What will you advise I do?

Doctors Response:

There are several complications that follow abortion. These include incomplete abortion in which there are remnants of placenta and/or foetal tissue in the uterus, pelvic infection, sub-fertility, traumatic injuries such as perforation to the uterus and damage to the cervix which may predispose to preterm labour in subsequent pregnancies as well as psychological problems. It is therefore pertinent that all women who have had an abortion should be seen for follow up around 2 weeks following the procedure. This visit is essential to ensure that the abortion is complete, exclude an ongoing pregnancy, check for possible pelvic infection, offer advice on contraception and sexual health and assess the woman’s emotional status.
