Placentae twisting round foetal neck, limb or forming a knot are described as placental accident. They are usually accidental finding discovered at birth but may be suspected in the course of labour were the foetal heart rate may be showing a pattern described as variable deceleration.

When such is noticed close foetal monitoring or better still foetal monitoring with a cardiotogram is advised. Variable deceleration with prolonged late deceleration and bradycardia may require the need for a caesarean delivery or assisted vaginal delivery during. 2nd stage of labour.
