Question: I had a tooth extraction a week ago and currently am feeling severe pain from the same area the tooth was removed. I don’t know if part of the tooth is still in the bone because it took the dentist a lot of time to do the extraction.

Doctors Response: You are likely suffering from Dry socket(alveolar osteitis). This is caused by destruction of the blood clot formed after the extraction. This leaves an open socket in which infected food and other debris accumulates in direct contact with the bone. It usually occurs after a traumatic extraction like in your case also when their is limited blood supply to the area, on oral contraceptive or radiotherapy.
Treatment should aim to keep the open socket clean and to protect exposed bone. It’s important to follow instructions given after extraction. Your dentist may need to put a dressing over the socket.
