Surrogacy has become an alternative fertility option for infertile couples who who have no hope of having their genetic offspring due to medical complications. There are various reasons why a couple otherwise known as intended parents are unable to carry pregnancy by themselves. There could be problem with her uterus, there could be problem due to removal of uterus (hysterectomy) and other factors which make pregnancy unachievable. Such was the case below, the patient had to choose surrogacy after problems of carrying pregnancy to term and so many failed attempts of assisted reproduction technique.

The grandmother had to help her daughter after many failed IVF and miscarriages. ‘She finally helps the couple to deliver a baby girl’. According to CNN,’Tracey Thompson, 54, offered to give her daughter the miracle of life by being the surrogate of her granddaughter. This birthing story started after 28-year-old Kelley McKissack faced years of infertility issues. Kelley and husband, Aaron, attempted multiple IVF treatments and suffered three heartbreaking miscarriages. Infertility affects one out of every six couples, like the McKissacks. The couple had four embryos left from previous IVF treatments when Thompson offered to become the couple’s surrogate. “My lovely mom offered to give me to greatest gift I could ever have in my life,” said the daughter.’ Other factors to consider are age (the woman must be 21 years and above), must have passed all the medical screening and must be ready to sign legal documents to relinquish the baby after birth and cut all ties

The choice of surrogate is a very careful process and intended parents are always very careful to avoid a situation where the ‘birth mother’ will later resurface to make legal claims. In America for instance parental rights are not guaranteed after surrogacy and the reproductive law is what the government keeps changing. In some states in US, the parents will still have to go through adoption proceedings to have total legal claims of the child. Only state law exists and is different from one state to another. As a result of this, family and friends are the first options to consider for surrogacy because of cost and legal issues. However, the American Society of Reproductive Medicine generally discourages surrogacy especially ‘if the child would carry the same genes as a child born of incest between first-degree relative’.
