Can Pregnancy be Achieved during perimenopausal?

You can still get pregnant during perimenopausal period. Although there is decline in some hormonal activities but it still doesn’t disturb pregnancy from happening. It is after menopause that this might not happen.

What Is Perimenopause?

This is a period of preparation into menopause. It is a transitional period to phase out the monthly release of eggs.During this period, there is decline in the production of estrogen by the ovaries.It usually begins when a woman is in her 40s but it can also starts in late 30s. A woman can be on this period between 1 to 4 and sometimes 10 years. It however stops being perimenopausal if monthly period doesn’t occur in 12 months. Towards the end of perimenopause there is a speed up of drastic reduction of estrogen and when the ovaries finally stop releasing eggs, then menopause has set in.

This process usually may come easily but in most cases the following symptoms are noticed;

Women in perimenopause have at least some these symptoms:




  • Hot flashes

  • Breast tenderness

  • Worse premenstrual syndrome

  • Lower sex drive

  • Fatigue

  • Irregular periods

  • Vaginal dryness; discomfort during sex

  • Urine leakage when coughing or sneezing

  • Urinary urgency (an urgent need to urinate more frequently)

  • Mood swings

  • Trouble sleeping

Irregular menstrual,periods are common during perimenopause which should not be of much concern except when pregnancy is anticipated but some other medical happenings that should be of concern and would require a visit to the doctor are




  • Heavy menstrual period and clot of blood

  • Long menstrual period

  • Spotting in between period

  • Spotting during sexual intercourse

  • Irregular close period

Abnormal bleeding during this period may be as a result of

  • hormone problems

  • birth control pills

  • pregnancy

  • fibroids

  • blood clotting problems

  • Presence of cancer.

How Is Perimenopause Diagnosed?

When symptoms are noticed,you should visit your doctor to further confirm through a blood test which will check the level of hormone .

Some of the perimenopause symptoms could be troublesome and when it does there are various medical treatments. Your doctor might recommend

  • Low-dose birth control pills for a short time.

  • Control of hot flashes through the use of birth control skin patch, vaginal ring, and progesterone injections.

No self-medications should be used during this time as not all women can use birth control hormones. Visit your doctor for various options.

At this period it is important to




  • Do regular exercise.

  • Stop smoking.

  • Sleep regularly

  • Reduce alcohol consumption

  • Calcium is good for the body during this period

  • Vaginal lubricants to help enjoy sex

  • Antidepressant to change mood
