Anaphylaxis is a fatal medical condition characterized with severe allergic reaction to medications, foods and venom. It is also a condition when the immune system excessively reacts in a way that causes a full-body allergic reaction.
It is mostly associated with bee sting and consumption of food with high risk of allergy such as peanuts and tree nuts. It is a life threatening condition if no proper and prompt treatment is given.
Symptoms
Common symptoms are:
Low blood pressure
Hives
Rash
Low Pulse
Abdominal pain
Anxiety and confusion
Abnormal heart rate
Cough
Swollen face
Shock
Breathing difficulty
Swallowing problems
Swollen mouth and throat
Nausea
Blue skin
Causes
The following are the common causes of anaphylaxis:
Medication
Milk
Peanuts
Tree nuts
Stings from insect stings
Fish
Exercise
Latex
Diagnosis
The diagnosis will be done after physical examination by the doctor and the monitoring of the heartbeat through the aid of stethoscope. Cracked sounds may suggest there is fluid in the lungs.
You will be asked if you had previous episode of allergic reaction.
Treatment
Using adrenaline medication to reduce the reaction
Using plastic card to mount pressure on the skin
Reassuring the patient and raising the feet of the person high with blanket covering.
Desist from using tweezers as it may inject more venom into the skin
Avoid oral medication if there is breathing difficulty
Using antihistamine
Complications
Anaphylactic shock may arise
Cessation of breathing
Blockage of airways
Heart attack
