Excessive vomiting and loss of Stamina in pregnancy

Question: Hi doctor, am in my first trimester and the rate at which I vomit is bordering me. Is my first pregnancy and I do know pregnant women vomit early in the morning but mine is different . I vomit all through the day and I have been hospitalized on various occasions because I kept vomiting until there was no strength in me. I have been absenting from work frequently and am not too happy about it.  Is my vomit different from the usual?

Doctors Response : Nausea and vomiting are common symptoms in early pregnancy. It affects between 70-80% of pregnant women and more than 35% of pregnant women take excuse duties as a result of this. It’s first trimester symptoms but that does not mean it can’t extend beyond it. Despite being referred to as ‘morning sickness’ , it doesn’t mean it can’t happen any other time of the day . It is only minority of cases that the symptoms are confined to the morning. it is usually not something of  serious medical issues.

Be that as it may, your case appears to be hyperemesis gravidarum: a severe, intractable form of nausea and vomiting. It causes imbalances of fluids and electrolytes, it disturbs nutritional intake and metabolism, causes physical and psychological debilitation. It is associated with adverse pregnancy outcome, which include the risk of preterm birth and low birth weight babies.

The causes remain unknown but it is often associated with high levels of serum human chorionic gonadotrophin(hCG), oestrogen and thyroxine.  Several cases of hyperemesis gravid arum cause malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies.

Treatment includes fluids replacement and thiamine supplementation. Antiemetics are equally safe to use.
