Question: My last pregnancy ended with a baby with a congenital heart defect and had to undergo a heart surgery but later died. This got my husband and I worried. I am presently 6 weeks pregnant and have been on 5mg folic acid. We can’t afford to go through the same experience again!

Doctors Response: Really sorry about your last experience. Good to know that you have been on tabs folic acid. Please get in touch with an Obstetrician/Gynaecologist. Screening for foetal abnormalities will be discussed with you and your spouse.

The tests are carried out between 11 and 22weeks gestation and include nuchal translucency scan at 11-14 weeks gestation with or without biochemical tests, or biochemical blood tests in isolation at 15-20 weeks as well as screening for structural congenital abnormalities by ultrasound examination at 18 to 20+6 weeks. There should be screening for clinical conditions later in pregnancy such as oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) at 24-28weeks gestation as well as a regular fetal growth and well being assessment.
