I really will want to have a vaginal delivery. Is there any harm to vaginal delivery?

Question: I had a myomectomy last year but presently pregnant and almost due. My doctor is however contemplating if I am to have a caesarean delivery or vaginal delivery. I really will want to have a vaginal delivery. Is there any harm to vaginal delivery?

Doctors Response: It is almost every woman’s dream to have a vaginal birth as it is natural and comes with fewer complications. Moreover, your stay in the hospital after delivery is short and there are no scars or cosmetic issues. However, if you have had an abdominal myomectomy which was extensive with endometrial cavity being breached at surgery, most obstetricians will feel more comfortable offering you a caesarean delivery.

A few will however, offer a trial of vaginal delivery with an argument that myomectomy scar heals better and are not subjected to contraction and retraction like caesarean section scars. You will have a need for close monitoring in labour with the aid of a cardiotocogram and partograph and a ready theatre as well as Anaesthetist, Paediatrician and Obstetrician on standby should you have a trial of labour.
